Pocketful of Miracles is a remake of Capra's earlier film, Lady for a Day, which was written together with his magical pen partner, Robert Riskin.
Apple Annie (Bette Davis) is an old Broadway fixture; she sells apples with a basket, she begs and drinks. Annie's daughter, Louise, is unaware of her mother's real life because she has always been in a convent in Spain. The jig is up when Louise comes to New York with her fiancee, the son of a Spanish nobleman, who plans to ask Annie her permission for her daughter Louise to marry her son.
The good hearted mobster (Glenn Ford) helps Annie in giving the impression that Louise's mother is a part of New York's aristocracy. Apple Annie's New York friends come to her rescue and try their best to make her an aristocratic "lady for a day".
